Gardening Badge


Otter:  Do 4 requirements including the 2 starred.

1.*  Plant and raise at least 3 different vegetables or fruits from seeds and care for them until they are ready to
harvest.  Know what type of soil they need, and how much water and sunlight they should have.  Recognize the
difference between your seedlings and weeds and keep your garden weeded as well.

2.*  Make plant markers for the plants you have chosen

3.  Visit your local county extension agent’s office, a local university agricultural or horticultural department, local
produce farm, or farmer’s market.  Make a poster about what you learned.

4.  Create a scarecrow for your garden.

5.  Harvest each of the three items in your garden and use them in a recipe.

6.  Donate items from your garden to a community food bank or rescue mission.



Dolphin:  Do 5 requirements including the 2 starred.

1.*  Plant and raise at least 5 different vegetables or fruits from seeds and care for them until they are ready to
harvest.  Know what type of soil they need, and how much water and sunlight they should have.  Recognize the
difference between your seedlings and weeds and keep your garden weeded as well.  Make plant markers for the
plants you have chosen.

2.*  Be able to identify at least 3 pests, insect or disease, that may damage your garden.  Find at least 2 organic
methods for dealing with each.

3.  Grow three different herbs and use them in at least one recipe.

4.  Plan and create a window or potted garden.

5.  Read a book about gardening and look through garden catalogs.

6.  Visit your local county extension agent’s office, a local university agricultural or horticultural department,  local
produce farm, or farmer‘s market.  Make a poster about what you learned.

Butterfly:  Do 6 requirements including the 2 starred.

1.*  Plan out a garden of at least 7 different fruits and vegetables using graph paper.  Make sure to leave enough
room for each plant as they grow as well as walk ways so that you can get to your plants to weed and harvest them.  
Plant and raise at least 7 different vegetables or fruits from seeds or seedlings and care for them until they are ready
to harvest.  Know what type of soil they need, and how much water and sunlight they should have.  Recognize the
difference between your seedlings and weeds and keep your garden weeded as well.  Make plant markers for the
plants you have chosen.  

Be able to identify at least 3 pests, insect or disease, that may damage your garden.  Find at least 2 organic

choose different careers.)
