Instrumental Music Badge

This badge can be earned for multiple instruments.  If you complete these requirements for the piano, you will
receive a piano badge, if you complete them for the clarinet, you will receive a clarinet badge, etc.


Otter—Do 4 requirements including the 3 starred

_____1 *Play two major scales OR one major scale and its relative minor on your instrument.

_____2 *Learn to play a new song on your instrument at your current level of ability. Play the song for another
person.

_____3. *Demonstrate the proper way to play your instrument and how to care for it. Know the names of all the
parts of your instrument.

_____4. Learn the history of your instrument and the names of three composers who have written music for it.
Know the name of at least one composition by each of the three composers.

_____5. Attend a concert in which your instrument has a part.

_____6. Learn a song to play with at least one other person & perform it.

_____7. Draw the symbols of and be able to explain: whole note & rest, half note & rest, quarter note & rest, eighth
note & rest, sixteenth note and rest.


Dolphin—Do 5 requirements including the 3 starred

_____1. *Play three major scales and two of their relative minors on your instrument.

_____2. *Learn to play a new song on your instrument at your current level of ability. Play the song for at least two
other people.

_____3. *Demonstrate the proper way to play your instrument and another instrument you don’t usually play. Know
the names of the parts of both instruments.

_____4. Learn the history of your instrument and the names of four composers who have written music for it. Know
the name of at least two compositions by each of the composers.

_____5. and ______6. are the same as the Otter #5 & 6

_____7. Explain the following time signatures and be able to fill in measures using BOTH notes and rests: 4/4, ¾,
2/4, and 6/8.

_____8. Recognize by ear or sight and be able to play on your instrument a half and whole tone, thirds, fifths, and
octaves.

_____9. Play your instrument in a recital/concert or during troop time.




Butterfly—Do 6 requirements including the 2 starred.

_____1. *Play three major scales and their relative minors on your instrument.

_____2. *Learn to play a new song on your instrument at your current level of ability. Play the song for at least
three other people.

_____3. Teach someone else how to play a song on your instrument. Teach him or her the proper care of the
instrument and the names of all the parts.

_____4. Explore the differences between your instrument and other instruments. Learn to play an easy song on a
new instrument. Learn how to care for it and the names of all the parts.

_____5. and _____6. are the same as the Otter # 5 & 6

_____7. Give the meaning of these terms: piano, forte, crescendo, diminuendo, retard, accelerando, Da Capo,
allegro, andante, lento. Give the symbol or abbreviation for all except the last three terms.

_____8. Play from memory a song you have learned in the last six months.

_____9. Play a song by sight. Explain all signs and terms in it.

____10. Compose a song and play it for someone else.


Eagle—Do 7 requirements including the 2 starred.

_____1. *Play four major scales and their relative minors on your instrument.

_____2. *Learn to play a new song on your instrument at your current level of ability. Play the song for at least four
other people on at least two different occasions.

_____3. and _____4. are the same as Butterfly # 3 and 4

_____5. and _____6. are the same as Otter #5 and 6 except that it’s two concerts and two songs performed.

_____7. What is an orchestra? Describe the four different sections of a symphony orchestra, naming three
instruments from each. To what section does each of the following belong: harp, bassoon, viola, celeste, tuba,
English horn, tympany, piccolo?

_____8. Play from memory a song you have learned in the last four months.

_____9. Play two songs by sight. Explain all signs and terms in them.

____10. Show with a baton how to lead a group playing songs written in ¾ and 4/4 time. Help a group perform
in some way: choose the piece and obtain copies of the music, schedule practices, or arrange for a performance.

____11. Play at least one song from each of four of the following categories:
Folk song, patriotic song, a church song/hymn, a classical piece written for your instrument, a classical piece written
for another instrument and transcribed for yours, a skill-building exercise, an action
